Kelly Hughes Iverson and M. Peggy Chu obtained a defense verdict for their client, a general surgeon. The plaintiffs alleged that the surgeon caused a full thickness bowel perforation during the repair of a hernia and did not detect it during the surgery. A perforation was identified when the patient returned to the hospital less than two days later, and the bowel was repaired. The defense persuaded a jury, that the hernia repair was performed correctly and thoroughly, and that there was no identifiable perforation during the procedure. At the end of a one-week trial, the jury found unanimously that the Defendant surgeon had met the standard of care and issued a defense verdict for the surgeon.
