Donald L. DeVries, Jr. obtained a defense verdict in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City for their clients, a cardiologist and Baltimore City hospital. The plaintiffs were the family of a 65-year-old patient who died while hospitalized after presenting with several significant medical conditions. The plaintiff alleged that the cardiologist should have recommended an urgent mitral valve replacement to prevent her death. The defense argued that the surgery was neither indicated for this patient, nor was she a surgical candidate. After a six-day trial, the jury quickly decided that the cardiologist acted reasonably and appropriately and entered a verdict in favor of the defendants.
