Alex Rothstein is Counsel at Goodell DeVries and a member of the firm's Employer Liability and Risk Management, Investigations, and Compliance practice groups. He has extensive experience in complex civil and criminal investigations and litigation.
Alex represents organizations in civil claims, including those that may arise from allegations of criminal misconduct. He defends various institutions against claims brought under the Maryland Child Victims Act (CVA). He has also defended municipal agencies in Baltimore and Philadelphia, including police departments and their employees, in high-stakes lawsuits alleging constitutional violations and has served as lead attorney in multiple 42 U.S.C. § 1983 lawsuits in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Alex has also provided expert discovery consultation to the Civil Rights Unit of the City of Philadelphia Law Department.
A former prosecutor, Alex was an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. In that role, he prosecuted a wide range of crimes, including crimes against persons, crimes against property, and felony gun offenses. He also spent over one year advocating on behalf of the United States in response to defense motions for compassionate release as well as defense motions for resentencing pursuant to the Second Look Amendment Act. Before his tenure with the federal government, Alex was an Assistant State's Attorney in Baltimore City. He served in the Major Investigations Unit, which investigated and prosecuted organized crime and matters involving violent, repeat offenders.
