Associate Attorney – Appellate Practice

Goodell DeVries is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our growing Appellate Practice Group. The ideal candidate will have a passion for legal research and writing, own books by Bryan Garner, Ross Guberman, and Matthew Butterick, and have an existing—possibly even strong—opinion on the writing styles of Justices Kagan, Roberts, Ginsburg, and Gorsuch.

The successful candidate must be a gifted legal writer who is eager to continue developing these skills. The firm favors candidates with appellate and federal clerkship experience or sinking feeling that BigLaw’s mass-attrition business model does not fit their career goals and life. The ideal candidate wants to develop an appellate practice while working closely with excellent trial lawyers (often defending health care providers) and is ready to practice in Maryland, with D.C. and Virginia bar admission a strong plus.

Goodell DeVries’s Appellate Practice Group is a place where your inner nerd can blossom and legal work can be fun again. Work with smart, considerate people who appreciate your talents and want to help you grow them. The best lawyers are happy lawyers.

Employees enjoy a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance, the potential for performance-based bonuses, a great work environment, an on-site fitness center, and maternity/paternity benefits. There’s even free in-building parking near the Inner Harbor.

Associate Attorney – Medical Malpractice Defense

Many law-firm Litigation Associates do all the right things but miss out on the career experiences that they envision and deserve: appearing in court for trials and hearings, writing important motions, taking and defending depositions, interacting regularly with clients and experts. They also want clients whose core mission goes beyond being profitable but makes a real difference in people’s lives. But they don’t want to pursue those personal goals at the cost of not working with a diverse array of top-tier attorneys to teach and mentor them. And is it too much to ask that the partners, associates, and staff be really nice, decent, reasonable people who truly appreciate you? And is there healthcare and free parking by the Inner Harbor? Does such a job even exist? It does.

Goodell, DeVries, Leech & Dann in Baltimore has been defending the region’s hospitals and healthcare heroes for decades in many of their most important civil litigation matters. It is the only firm with a Tier 1 rating in Chambers USA for Maryland Medical Malpractice Defense. The work is challenging and important. It requires a passion for healthcare in all its parts: the medicine, the care providers, and the patients. It also requires a passion for the core components of private civil litigation: trial work, legal research and substantive brief-writing, discovery, depositions, expert witnesses. If this is exactly what you wanted your litigation career to be and you find yourself getting something less than that, don’t settle any longer. Join us.

Benefits include:
  • Free parking
  • On-site fitness center
  • Paid parental leave
  • Excellent health benefits
  • Competitive salaries with bonus opportunities
  • Collaborative culture

Maryland Bar membership required; D.C. and/or Virginia Bar membership preferred. If not already licensed to practice in D.C., candidate must be willing to become barred. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.  Candidates must apply directly; no third-party/recruiter submissions will be accepted. EOE.
